We love to highlight the professional photographers who use ONA bags in our Photographer Profile series. However, we realized that there are also plenty of super-talented bloggers who take beautiful photos (and write, and edit, and share) as a living–often without any formal training or professional associations. Even when bloggers are talented writers, they often rely on photos to bring their stories to life or to share their everyday lives as a story.
Today, we’re introducing you to Andi Fisher of Misadventures with Andi, a food and travel blog that makes you alternately drool with hunger or wanderlust. Andi carries the Bowery Camera Bag and Insert in Field Tan.
ONA: How did you get into blogging?
AF: In 2008 I started a new job in San Francisco and was a little under-challenged in my role so I decided to take a creative writing course to funnel some restless energy. The night of the first class I realized that writing really was a passion of mine. I started Misadventures with Andi and have never looked back.
ONA: What’s your favorite thing to photograph?
AF: Food. Not just to photograph. To talk about. To plan trips around. Basically anything to do with food! I am passionate about food and believe it brings people together. You can have a table full of people from different cultures, religions, political affiliations and break down all kinds of walls when you ask what their favorite food is. I find food to be a beautiful subject matter and my favorite photos are generally of food.
ONA: How does photography play a role on your blog?
AF: It is a huge part of my blog. With a background in digital marketing with many years working on websites, I believe it is inherently important to have some visual aspect to your content. I am lucky to be married to an extremely talented photographer and he definitely contributes to some of the great shots on my web. He has been taking pictures as a hobby for close to forty years. I am very much an amateur, still struggling to find my style.
ONA: What camera do you shoot with? What is your “go to” lens of choice?
AF: We are a Canon household, with a couple of 5D (Mark II and III) and lots of Canon and Zeiss lenses. But I have a new baby, a Fuji X-E2 which is incredibly lightweight and easy to port around, especially in my ONA Bag and takes fantastic photos.
ONA: What inspired you to start your blog?
AF: I was working at a company I loved for several years and decided I needed a change of place and transferred to their European headquarters in Switzerland. That was 2003 and while there were definitely people out there blogging it was not on my radar. Living in a foreign country without my parents for the first time (I grew up military living all over) definitely led to mishaps, or misadventures, which I reported to all my friends and family in a regular email called Misadventures with Andi. I didn’t know at the time but this was my “birth” as a blogger. When I launched my blog it seemed natural to keep the name.
ONA: In one sentence, what advice would you give to a blogger just starting out?
AF: Blog for you. Within six months of beginning to blog I was fortunate to attend a small blogging conference. During a session on the basics of blogging one of the panelists declared, “Own Your Blog.” There is no right or wrong. There is what works for you. Don’t lose sight of why you started a blog in the first place; it should be for the pure pleasure. If you write good stuff, people will come read it!
Also, read other people’s blog and comment!
ONA: How did you hear about ONA?
I have been seeking the perfect camera bag for a while and just haven’t really found anything that worked functionally and looked nice. I have a dear friend in Paris, Lindsey of Lost in Cheeseland (who was also featured on an ONA Blogger Profile late last year). A couple of Christmases ago she was home in Philadelphia and Instagrammed that she had a new camera bag…a gorgeous ONA. When I saw it, I knew I wanted one too. With my new Fuji, the Bowery truly is the perfect bag for bringing my camera with me every day to work in San Francisco – whether it is out and about in the city or riding mass transit, or taking it across the world to Paris, wherever I go, it goes.
